Propane Storage Tanks In Various Sizes

Most people are surprised with the number of different types of propane storage tanks that are available. Some of these are only typically available for commercial use, and can hold tens of thousands of gallons of liquid propane. Others, are 100 gallons or under and typically find their use in small commercial or residential areas. Along with these various tanks, there are also accessories that are available in order to help you to maintain them properly. In more extreme cases, nitrogen padding or other features may be necessary in order for them to operate in difficult weather environments. Here is a little bit more about propane storage tanks, and their usefulness to us.

Propane is an odorless gas that is a byproduct of oil refinery. Since it is only created by the refinement of oil, it is in limited supply but there are vast storages of this gas that are available in salt mines in the Midwest United States. 90 percent of the gas that is used in the United States is created and stored here. This makes it rather unique among the various fuel sources that are available. In order to get it from these larger underground tanks into our heating systems and barbecue grills, a variety of different propane storage tanks are used.

One of the most common places that you will see these tanks is at the location where you get your propane tank fuel. These types of tanks are generally anywhere from 3000 up to 5,000 gallons. They are fueled by larger tank trucks from large gas and electric providers, which may contain up to 10,000 gallons of this liquid fuel. These usually are used in order to get it from the larger tanks to the smaller tanks for commercial purposes. Another place where you may readily see these tanks available is on the back of delivery trucks. Perhaps they have a single large tank in order to fill those on location or they may contain multiple smaller tanks, generally around 100 gallons in size.

The various accessories that are available for these tanks really depends on the use. In order to get the propane from inside the tank into a usable form, it is necessary to vent the vapors off of the top, which will provide the fuel. In some cases, such as whenever propane is used for hot air balloon travel, nitrogen padding may be necessary because of the extreme differences in temperature. This is a way for you to be able to pressurize the tank without having to worry about heating it and the possibility of a tank rupture.

Last but not least, we have the common propane storage tanks that are found in almost every home around the country. These are used to fuel our barbecue grills, and in some cases, a variety of different type of heaters. They are a very convenient part of our lives, and something that we may, perhaps, take for granted. By having one of these that is readily available at any time, and the various accessories that go along with it, you would be surprised with what you are able to do.
